OPAL Play

Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) at Our School

At our school, we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, a nationally recognised approach that transforms playtimes into rich, meaningful learning experiences. OPAL helps us create an outdoor environment where every child can explore, imagine, collaborate and thrive.
Through OPAL, our playground becomes an extension of the classroom. Children have access to a wide range of open‑ended resources that encourage creativity, problem‑solving and teamwork. Whether they are building dens, creating imaginative worlds, experimenting with natural materials or engaging in active play, pupils develop confidence, independence and resilience.
The impact on our school community is hugely positive. OPAL play supports physical health and wellbeing, giving children the freedom to move, climb, build and be active. Socially, pupils learn to negotiate, communicate and work together, which strengthens friendships and reduces playground conflict. Teachers consistently notice calmer, more focused learners in the afternoons, as children return to class happy, energised and ready to learn.
Most importantly, OPAL brings joy. It ensures that every child—regardless of age, ability or personality—has the opportunity to experience high‑quality play every day. It enriches our school culture and helps us nurture confident, curious and imaginative learners.
